DisneyNature Presents BEARS

In an epic story of breathtaking scale, Disneynature's new True Life Adventure "Bears" showcases a year in the life of a bear family as two impressionable young cubs are taught life's most important lessons. Set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, their journey begins as winter comes to an end and the bears emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold. The world outside is exciting-but risky-as the cubs' playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches. As the season changes from spring to summer, the brown bears must work hard to find food-ultimately feasting at a plentiful salmon run-while staying safe from rival male bears and predators, including an ever-present wolf pack.

"Bears" captures the fast-moving action and suspense of life in one of the planet's last great wildernesses-Alaska! Directed by Alastair Fothergill ("Earth," "African Cats" and "Chimpanzee") and Keith Scholey ("African Cats"), "Bears" arrives in theaters April 18, 2014, to celebrate Earth Day.

UNDER THE SKIN

Starring Scarlett Johansson

Fans of Jonathan Glazer's "Sexy Beast" and "Birth" have been anticipating Under the Skin with a yearning usually reserved for superhero franchises. Based on Michel Faber's acclaimed novel, the story's premise is perfectly suited to a director known for compression, focus, and cool shocks.

On Scotland's lonely back roads, a beautiful woman (Scarlett Johansson) stalks unwitting men. Her identity and her motives unclear, she is simply, and quite literally, a sexual threat. Her eyes deadened but alert, she prowls night streets and deserted locales in a white van, seeking male victims. More could be said about the plot, but it's best to allow Under the Skin to reveal itself. From its arresting first image — a pure, white pinpoint of light — it expands outward to become an increasingly absorbing mystery. It's also a Rorschach test for everything one might fear about relations between men and women.

NYMPHOMANIAC VOLUMES 1 & 2

From Director Lars Von Trier

The latest from groundbreaking, iconoclastic Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier comes to us as one story told over two English-language feature films. Charlotte Gainsbourg is Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who is discovered, badly beaten in an alley, by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), a reclusive bachelor who takes her to his home and tends her wounds. Over several "chapters," Joe recounts to Seligman her erotic history from adolescence and young-adulthood (portrayed in flashback by newcomer Stacy Martin).

As widely reported, the unrated Nymphomaniac films contain graphic depictions of sexuality to a degree unprecedented in a mainstream film. However, anchored by the dialogue between Joe and Seligman, Volume I is as philosophical, and sometimes as humorous, as it is provocative. Volume I also stars Shia LeBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Sophie Kennedy Clark and Connie Nielsen.

NYMPHOMANIAC: VOLUME II picks up with the story of Joe's adulthood, where her journey of self-discovery leads to darker complications.

Running Time Volume 1: 124

Running Time Volume 2: 131

THE RAID 2

He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen - a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls - rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn't have been more wrong. Formidable though they may have been, Rama's opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain.

His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap. And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender "Yuda." In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco - the son of a prominent gang kingpin - to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.

MEAN GIRLS

Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in this comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa, where she was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on.

Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics," led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen Weiners (Lacey Chabert), and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried). While Cady is grateful for her new friends, it doesn't take long for her to realize how manipulative they can be, and it isn't long before Regina and her pals are on the warpath. Cady must face a level of vengeful behavior for which years in the jungle never prepared her.

FINDING VIVIAN MAIER

As much a captivating mystery, as a fascinating documentary, this film explores the enigma of Vivian Maier, an extremely private person who worked as a nanny for almost 50 years while she secretly took more than 100,000 photographs that she hid in storage lockers during her lifetime.

She never showed her work to anyone, but since its recent (and accidental) discovery, she is now considered among the 20th century's greatest photographers. Walking the streets of Chicago and New York City, Maier quietly captured faces, moods and moments (as well as many self-portraits) with her Rolleiflex and created unforgettable imagery that has only come to light in the last few years. Her strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never-before-seen photographs, films and interviews with those who thought they knew her.

LE WEEK-END

From the Director of "Notting Hill"

In Roger Michell's magically buoyant and bittersweet film, Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan play a long-married couple who revisit Paris for a long weekend for the first time since their honeymoon, in hopes of rekindling their relationship or, perhaps, bringing it to an end. Diffident, wistful Nick (Broadbent) and demanding, take-charge Meg (Duncan) careen from harmony to disharmony to resignation and back again as they take stock and grapple with love, loss, regret and, disappointment, in their own very English way. When Meg and Nick run into their insufferably successful old friend Morgan, an American academic superstar with a fancy Parisian address played with pure delight by Jeff Goldblum, their squabbles rise to a register that's both emotionally rich and very funny.

THE LUNCHBOX

Mumbai's 'Dabbawallahs' are a community of 5000 Lunchbox deliverymen. Harvard University analyzed their delivery system, and concluded that just one in 4 million lunchboxes is ever delivered to the wrong address. This is the story of that one lunchbox.

Middle class housewife Ila is trying once again to add some spice to her marriage, this time through her cooking. She desperately hopes that this new recipe will finally arouse some kind of reaction from her neglectful husband. She prepares a special lunchbox to be delivered to him at work, but, unbeknownst to her, it is mistakenly delivered to another office worker, Saajan, a lonely man on the verge of retirement. Curious about the lack of reaction from her husband, Ila puts a little note in the following day's lunchbox, in the hopes of getting to the bottom of the mystery.

This begins a series of lunchbox notes between Saajan and Ila, and the mere comfort of communicating with a stranger anonymously soon evolves into an unexpected friendship. Gradually, their notes become little confessions about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, and even small joys. They each discover a new sense of self and find an anchor to hold on to in the big city of Mumbai that so often crushes hopes and dreams. Still strangers physically, Ila and Saajan become lost in a virtual relationship that could jeopardize both their realities.

JODOROWSKY'S DUNE

In 1975 Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky, whose cult films El Topo and The Holy Mountain launched and ultimately defined the midnight movie phenomenon, began work on his most ambitious project yet. Obtaining rights to Frank Herbert's global science fiction phenomenon Dune, he set about assembling his dream cast and crew. Starring his own 12-year-old son Brontis alongside a cast that would include Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Salvador Dali, featuring music by Pink Floyd and art by some of the most visionary talents of the era, including H.R. Giger (who went on to create the monster in Alien) and Jean 'Moebius' Giraud, Jodorowsky's Dune was poised to change cinema forever.

For two years, Jodo and his team of "spiritual warriors" worked night and day on the massive task of creating the fabulous world of Dune: over 3,000 storyboards, numerous paintings, incredible costumes, and an outrageous, moving and powerful script. In the words of Jodorowsky's producer, Michel Seydoux, "It should have been enough. But it wasn't." Jodorowsky is both passionate and very funny as he tells the epic story of the hallucinatory masterpiece that was not to be. Directed by Frank Pavich.

OPENING NIGHT (4/25) SPECIAL SCREENING/Q&A @ 7:15pm:

Bay Area Composer, Kurt Stenzel, who did the Critically-Acclaimed Sci-Fi Score for this new documentary will be at The Nick on Opening Night for Q&A on Friday, April 25th.

The film’s score was meant for Pink Floyd to do back in the 1970s, but with the film never being made, that score was never created. Now, composer, Kurt Stenzel, has created a masterful sci-fi score that sets just the right tone for both the documentary and what would have been Dune, and has critics swooning. The SF Weekly proclaims, “it’s hard to imagine [Pink Floyd] improving on Stenzel’s new score.” Variety agrees that, “Stenzel augments the entire picture with a suitably trippy score.”

See Kurt Stenzel in person as we kick off our regular run of this epic new documentary! Movie starts @ 7:15pm with Q&A after for those who attend the 7:15pm screening.
